Join a walking group near you…

Being outdoors in the fresh air is great for both physical and mental health, and being part of a group can help you meet people. You can check out our timetable to find a walk that’s near you.

All of our walks are free, and are led by trained volunteers. The groups are friendly, and always ready to welcome new members.

If you’re new to walking, or returning after a break, starting with a local shorter walk may be a good idea.

There is no expectation that you have to walk every week. You don’t need expensive equipment or clothing, although good footwear, something warm and a waterproof coat are recommended.

If walking in a group isn’t for you we have a number of walking sport opportunities such as Walking Football and Walking Netball at various locations. These sessions are a slowed down version of the game and are suitable for everyone and for any ability.

Success of group walks.

Walking across North East Derbyshire is going from strength to strength; we now have 12 regular walks embedded in the local community. Our Health Walk in Clay Cross has made an impact by offering a gentle one mile walk around Kenning Park and visiting our local Forest School for a warm by the fire and a hot drink. These social connections are key when helping people tackle loneliness and help them discover what is happening in their local area. We also have a new walk in Killamarsh, that aims to give local people the opportunity to get outdoors and explore local green spaces and canals. Getting outdoors can really boost your health and wellbeing, whist also improving sleep patterns and mood. We are also currently looking for new Volunteer Walk Leaders, if you can give your time and experience to support our existing walks then please get in touch.

Walk Moor – get out walking on the Eastern Moors!

In partnership with Derbyshire Dales District Council and The Eastern Moor Partnership, we have put together a fantastic programme of walks across the Eastern Moors – led by our experienced and informative walk leaders.

These walks take place on open moorland so you can expect great views and wide open spaces. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore new areas, get more exercise and meet new people. Across the year, this programme provides opportunities to encounter ground nestling birds in the spring, purple heather in late summer and the deer rut in the autumn.

Walks are typically between 2.5 miles and 3.5 miles long and should take around 90 minutes. We also have few walks that are longer in length, hillier and rockier, labelled Walk Moor Plus.

Booking is optional, but does mean you’ll be notified of any changes before the day. To reserve your place please contact Helen Milton: helen.milton@derbyshiredales.gov.uk Tel: 01629 761194. Alternatively you can just meet the group on the day.
