Erewash Walking Month: 1st – 31st May 2025

Following feedback on Erewash Walking Week 2024, Erewash Borough Council have decided this year to align it with the National Walking Month of May as Erewash Walking Month to be held from 1st – 31st May when the weather, day light and ground conditions are more favourable. We think that running walks over one month rather than one week, will allow people to join in more than one walk and hopefully encourage more walks to be organised across the whole of the borough. We also hope that it will allow more walks to take place at different times of day to cater for everyone including both the retired, working people, children, and families.

We have invited established and new walking groups, parish councils and other stakeholders to host walks to promote the benefits of walking more every day for improved health and wellbeing. These opportunities will allow established walking groups in Erewash to recruit some new walkers and help other organisations wanting to set up a new walking group with an opportunity to get this underway.

In preparation and to support all host organisations, we will be providing Walk Derbyshire Walk Leader Training which will be held on Saturday 1st March 2025 from 10-3 pm at West Park Leisure Centre, Long Eaton to help organisations planning to host walks, to identify and train their Walk Leaders to run their walk.

We are starting our planning much earlier than normal this year because we want to get the word out earlier so that people know what is happening and can plan to attend as many walks as possible with friends and family.

We will once again be running the 85-mile walking challenge during National Walking Month of May and Erewash Walking Month whereby participants walk 85 miles which equates to 2.74 miles each day which is just under an hour of daily walking.

National Walking Day

We will be holding a Walk Group / Leader Catch up meeting on the 2nd of April which is National Walking Day and then Ilkeston and District Local History Society will be running an Old Railways Walk and explain to all Walk Leaders how it’s been 60 years since the railways were open and how there is so much to see and discover about the old railways.
