The Bolsover District Active Schools Network (BDASN) teamed up with Bolsover District Council’s Physical Activity and Sports Development Team and East Midlands Railway to deliver a Make, Munch and Move session, where parents, carers and children learned how to make a range of healthy snacks to take with them on a train-and-walk journey as part of the BDASN HAF (holiday activities) programme.
The two days at Bainbridge Hall and Creswell Heritage and Wellbeing Centre involved children from across the area alongside their families learning about how to make healthy meals and snacks, active travel, exploring what’s on their doorstep, nature connection……
Children and their families made healthy pot noodles, vegetable and fruit crumbles, pizza pockets and a bag of trail mix to snack on during their walk!
East Midlands Railway kindly supplied goodie bags and free return train travel between Creswell Station and Langwith–Whaley Thorns Station, giving the group easy access into Poulter Park, where Volunteer Walk Leaders guided the group to a picnic area to enjoy the snacks they had made and explored the park before returning by train to Creswell.
Live Life Better Derbyshire also joined in the fun both days and at Bainbridge Hall we were also joined by the oral health team to chat to families about support that is out there and answer questions about making healthy choices.
The feedback was really positive however the children were a little upset the train journey wasn’t for longer!
The Move, Make and Munch days were funded through the Derbyshire Holiday Activities Fund. Alice Shipley from Bolsover District Active Schools Network said “Both events were a huge success, and we were delighted to see so many families engaging in the days. Working in partnership with Bolsover District Council and Derbyshire County Council team brought all expertise together over two great days. We are already planning more days in the summer!”
