Nordic Walking in Bolsover (Mental Health Awareness Week)

Written by Wayne Hatton Bolsover District Council Physical Activity & Sports Development Manager

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week Bolsover District Council are giving employees the opportunity to try Nordic walking. There are 2 instructor led sessions available on the 15th and 16th of May. This year’s theme is ‘community’ so we are hoping employees from different departments, who might not have contact in their day to day jobs will take part and form some social bonds.

However, there is also the fact that during the day to day job most of us tend to look down too much, round our shoulders and bend our heads forwards when we are sitting at our desks/at the computer/eating/driving.  This puts immense stress on our necks and upper backs and pulls us completely out of alignment, often resulting in back pain. Nordic walking can help with these issues.

Nordic Walking

  • Corrects poor posture and helps re-educate your body to hold itself correctly, even when you are not Nordic walking.
  • Strengthens the deep abdominal (‘core’) muscles which protect your back and improve your balance
  • The more advanced Nordic walking technique gently rotates the spine, boosting circulation
  • Is a powerful, bone-strengthening exercise.
  • Is based entirely on the body’s natural walking pattern and is nurturing not jarring, like running.
